Yes, you can edit or delete a reply after you've posted it
A reply to a Google review isn't locked in the moment you hit post. If you spot a typo, want to soften the tone, or need to correct something factual, you can go back and edit it — or remove it entirely — at any time from your Google Business Profile.
This is worth knowing because it removes a lot of the pressure around replying fast. It's better to post a reasonable reply quickly and refine it later than to sit on a review for days trying to get the wording perfect.
How to edit a reply
From Google Business Profile (or by searching your business name in Google and opening the Business Profile panel), open the reviews section, find the review with your existing reply, and select the option to edit it. Update the text and save — the change applies to the public reply, replacing what was there before.
There's no visible "edited" label on a reply the way some platforms mark edited comments, so there's no downside to fixing something after the fact.
- Open your Business Profile and go to your list of reviews.
- Find the review and select the edit option under your existing reply.
- Update the wording and save — the public reply updates in place.
How to delete a reply
The same menu that lets you edit a reply also lets you delete it outright, which removes your response and leaves the review unanswered again. This is the right move if a reply went out with wrong information, references a name or detail you shouldn't have named publicly, or simply doesn't represent the business the way you'd like.
Deleting your reply doesn't touch the review itself — only your business can remove or edit a review through the separate flagging process for reviews that break Google's policies, which is a different action from managing your own reply.
The character limit that trips people up
Google caps owner replies at a generous length — up to roughly 4,000 characters — but that's not a target to aim for. The replies that read best to customers browsing your profile are two to four sentences: thank the reviewer, address the specific thing they mentioned, and if it's a complaint, say what happens next.
If a reply won't post, character length is one of the first things to check, especially if you've pasted in a longer explanation or copied a template with extra boilerplate attached. Trim it down to the parts that actually matter to that reviewer and the limit stops being an issue.
How long changes take to show up
Edits and deletions to a reply are usually reflected quickly, though — like most changes to a Business Profile — it can occasionally take a little longer to show consistently everywhere Google displays your listing. If an edit doesn't seem to have taken after a reasonable wait, it's worth checking you're logged into the correct Business Profile account for that location, since that's the most common reason a change appears not to have saved.
